The Scoop on Active Aging

Every corner of our community benefits as the region becomes more active. A vital and growing corner of our community is our aging population. No matter your stage in life, physical activity supports health, well-being, and quality of life. But this is especially true and acutely important for our region’s aging population.

Today we’re announcing a new partnership with the Greater Richmond Age Wave Coalition to build a bank of resources for active aging in RVA.

We can ignore the statistics OR we can celebrate them! Nearly 80,000,000 individuals started turning 65 in 2011. As the Baby Boom Generation retires and ages, our society will have opportunities to capitalize on the wisdom of a generation. It will also have challenges associated with access to quality healthcare and rising healthcare costs.

We want to do our part to make sure that as our neighbors around Richmond age, they pick up and recommit to healthy habits.  To support longevity, good health, and, above all, keep our area’s seniors engaged and vital physical activity is an essential part of healthy aging.

The Greater Richmond Age Wave Coalition is the perfect partner for this effort with Active RVA. They’re pros. Their partners, like Senior Connections, the Capital Area Agency on Aging, and VCU’s Department of Gerontology, know not only the research on aging adults, but they know the practice too. Their team, much like Active RVA’s, is cross-industry so they’re pulling experts from academia, service providers, non-profits, and the business world.

What to Expect from our Active Aging partnership

“We want to connect more individuals to resources throughout the Richmond region,” Dr. Ayn Welleford of VCU’s Department of Gerontology notes. “We’re engaging elders and caregivers, really everyone across the lifespan, with Best Practices for optimal, positive aging and caregiving.”

To kick things off here on activerva.org, Dr. Welleford penned the first piece in a series on Caregiver Fitness.

In the months to come, we’ll be featuring articles from the Age Wave’s team of thoughtful authors. We’ll feature relevant events, fashion resource guides, and present breaking news, all from the perspective of local experts who are not only dialed in on these issues and trends nationally but dialed in to RVA as well!
