Michael Paladino is the Director of Claims and Insurance Operations at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) in Richmond, VA. He is also the founder of MJP Risk Management, LLC, an insurance and healthcare consulting company whose clients included Partners Healthcare and Johns Hopkins Hospitals. As a senior executive with more than 30 years of workers’ compensation, managed care, and business experience, Mike’s focus at VCUHS is to identify opportunities for taking and managing risk, managing all property and casualty insurance programs and providing leadership and direction to the company’s claim operation.
• VCUHS was the 2010 winner of the nationally recognized Theodore Roosevelt Award for the best claim operation of a non-profit organization. Led the restructuring of insurance programs and created an internal claim department that significantly reduced losses, lost work days and dramatically improved safety organization wide over the past ten years.
• Developed a Total Absence Management program that truly integrates all types of disability programs such as workers’ compensation, short term and long term disability, FMLA, and corporate absences. Makes more efficient use of employees who have non-occupational disabilities by returning them to work sooner in a light duty capacity.
• Developed the framework, data, and training to significantly reduce workplace violence at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. New protocols and techniques reduced injuries from 70 – 100 annually to now fewer than 6 per year.
Mike has over thirty years of property & casualty claims insurance experience and risk management experience; the majority devoted to the implementation of claims and managed care programs tailored to workers’ compensation.
Mike began his insurance career with Crum & Forster Insurance Companies, a company ranked among the twenty largest commercial property-casualty companies in America. Over a fifteen year period, Mike held various positions ranging from multi line field claim adjuster to Assistant Vice President of Workers’ Compensation for country-wide claims and managed care.
Subsequent to Crum & Forster, Mike served nine years as Corporate Vice President of Workers’ Compensation Claims and was the Senior Managed Care Officer and Chief Knowledge Officer for Zenith National Insurance Corp., headquartered in Woodland Hills, CA. Mike developed TheZenith’s managed care programs, customer service centers and fully integrated them into the claim process. He was responsible for expanding their provider fraud initiatives resulting in the detection and prevention of provider fraud. Zenith expanded operations from a regional carrier to a national carrier while achieving one of the lowest loss ratios of the top 50 workers’ compensation insurers in the nation.
Mike has held many industry positions, including past membership on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI) and on the National Council for Compensation Insurance (NCCI) Assigned Risk Pool. He was a founding member of the Managed Care Research Group for the Workers’ Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) in Cambridge, MA. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Self Insurers Association and remains an executive officer of the BOD.
A graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Mike successfully completed an executive program at the University of Michigan in 2000 as part of his role to teach executive leadership how to become better teachers and leaders. In February 2003, Mike completed his MA in Organizational Management at the University of Phoenix.
